You are part of a small group of people who believe in the power of education and have made our work possible. Every year, we invite a handful of our highest impact supporters to visit campus and see how their contributions are working to transform our community.
We only run a few Impact Trips a year, and we open them only to folks who have donated or fundraised a significant amount of funds to make our work possible. While we wish we could invite every supporter to campus, we don’t have the staff or capacity to host frequents trips or guests — and more importantly, we’ve seen firsthand how relying on volunteers to help meet the basic needs of vulnerable children can have negative unintended consequences (related to attachment issues and lack of consistency for children who need it most). As such, we’ve worked hard to build a strong Kenyan-led team who teach, guide, feed, and care for the students we serve. The folks who join us on campus help make it possible to invest in our local team this way, and come to see their impact firsthand and learn more about the goals of the organization.
A typical Impact Trip Itinerary is as follows:
Day 1: Arrive in Kenya (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport) - since the majority of international flights arrive in Nairobi at night, our team will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the Tribe Hotel.
Day 2: After breakfast, embark on the 90-minute drive to campus with our team, arriving at Flying Kites in time for a tour and lunch with the students and teachers. After lunch, settle into our staff & visitor house and a gentle hike in the foothills. Dinner around the fireplace is hosted by our Kenyan Executive Director, Warucu Kijuu and prepared by our school chef Harrison Maina with many ingredients from our farm!
Day 3: Spend the day at the Flying Kites Academy, visit a classroom during class, help the team prepare breakfast or lunch, enjoy sports or arts with our students. In the afternoon, visit one of our partner schools to meet their leadership team and learn about the unique goals and challenges of schools participating in the Flying Kites School Network.
Day 4-6: Wake up early for departure to Karen Blixen Safari Camp from the Flying Kites Campus. After a short 40-min. flight, you will arrive in the Maasai Mara where you will enjoy world-class game drives in Africa's greatest wildlife reserve. See elephant, giraffe, lion, zebra, hyena, cheetah, leopard, and if you're lucky - rhino, in their natural habit. Nights are spent around camp fires, eating gourmet food and and sleeping in luxury tented safari camps.
Day 7: Depart for home after a morning game drive
Cost of safari, hotel and local transport: $3,000 // Minimum donation or fundraising target: $25,000
